It is with a great deal of pleasure that I stand here before you today as your son or daughters publisher.

These children, at the ripe ol’ age of 9, 10, 11 wrote and illustrated their children’s picture book this year.

They learnt all about the process of

  • Creating an idea
  • Building a concept
  • Writing a story for a target audience
  • Editing and rewriting, polishing and scrubbing
  • Planning tools for picture books – using a story board and dummy rough
  • Drafting, finishing and then rendering illustrations
  • And finally, approving final copy.

It is a process, definitely a manageable process, but to give you even a better idea of the time ....

  • In learning all about book building, the children attended over 26 hours of workshops – that is like 26 episodes of the Simpsons.
  • In writing their story and editing and polish, they sat at a desk for over 20 hours – that is like a hour a day on a DS for three weeks.
  • In actually finishing enough illustrations for a picture book, they drew and painted for nearly 60 hours each – that is like watching 20 to 30 movies.
That is a crazy 100 hours plus!

These children have learnt resilience is the key, to accept their mistakes not a weaknesses but as learning opportunities.  They understand first hand what it is to be disappointed, to dig in and start again.  They understand what it is to do something again and see the remarkable improvement which comes from the accumulated experience.  They have learnt to face that feeling in your tummy which usually says RUN and to stick at something until it is finished.

Thank you Jodie Rigby for tutoring for the first year this year.  Tutors will become the integral key of the Child Writes program in years to come, ensuring children beyond the geographical boundary of Toowoomba have an opportunity to participate.

Jodie – we have some flowers for you by way of thanks… (Ask George Killen to hand them over)  Thank you.

To you as parents, as educators, as carers… Thank you for allowing them the experience.  Thank you for supporting the experience.  Thank you for being so integral to the experience.

Now to long term supporters...

I would like to introduce you to Mr Peter Rookas, CEO of the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation, who is accepting a set of books on behalf of the Children’s Ward at the Toowoomba Base Hospital.

(Rachel Webb to hand over books)
